In the summer, it goes without saying that most of us enjoy being outdoors either soaking up the sun or splashing around in the water. Since we have had such a beautiful British summer this year (so far!), it only makes sense that I would write a spotlight on a designer we work with who really reflects these bright, vibrant and joyful feelings that we associate with summer. Whether you are on an exotic beach holiday, spending time by a lake or simply relaxing by the coast, Linda Fenwick’s designs exude her fascination with shells but her pieces enable us to feel close to the seaside all year round.
Originally from Dallas, Texas, Linda has now been based in Yorkshire after living in London where, over the years, she has utilised her experience and skills — involving art, fashion and interior design — to develop a style of furniture completely unique to her, a notion that we really embrace and promote at Decor A List. Let’s find out a little more about Linda’s practise and scroll through to read some of our tips for your home:
Catherine: What first inspired you to start creating furniture pieces with shells?
Linda: Tables and mirrors look amazing shelled and can be the stand-out piece in a room. I am always searching for beautiful furniture to add shell detail. Before my first London exhibition a well known interior designer suggested I shell interior accessories. He was right and we really enjoy sourcing and making smaller pieces.
Catherine: Do you collect the shells yourself?
Linda: Yes – as a child our family spent summers on Sanibel Island which is covered with shells. To this day if there are shells in the beach I can’t sunbathe or read – I have to collect them. Now, I order the majority of the shells from one or two excellent companies – sustainability sourced importers.
Watch the video below to see how Linda delicately and intricately places by hand each shell in its place.
Catherine: What kind of projects have you worked on in the past?
Linda: We have been so fortunate to have been asked to work on a diverse range of projects in several countries by interior designers and directly with clients. My team is accomplished and together we can take on most anything and we have been inspired by our client’s ideas as well. Each one is so different- some have loved being part of the process and others prefer the element of surprise. We have shelled loggias, indoor pool areas, garden pavilions, bars in restaurants, bathrooms, pool houses – just to name a few. We ship furniture and mirrors abroad and we hand deliver everything in the UK free of charge. Personal service is so important.
Catherine: Your shell house is beautiful, how long did that take to complete?
Linda: Thank you…. it was my first project – I worked on it only in my spare time so it took a bit longer- so probably around 18 months. My only deadline was the we were opening our garden that year for the first time so I needed to finish it – which I did the day before! Then my first commission came unexpectedly which began the business.
Catherine: How would you describe your style in three words?
Linda: Fresh, classical, detailed
Catherine: What makes your home unique to you?
Linda: The colours, fabrics and accessories which I have collected. Most of the house is in blues, stones and whites but the dining room is willow green- Bowood – and the drawing room has crushed raspberry thrown in!
Shell decoration does not have to be exclusive to coastal locations because the textural qualities and subtle colours lend themselves to any environment. The framed panels offer an alternative to paintings and can be tailored to your required size and colours. A one of pieces has the possibility to completely transform your interior and a focal point which will not go unnoticed.
