We’re all guilty of it — yes, even I’ll admit it: I spend HOURS on Pinterest. It’s just so easy to get carried away with not only images of pasta, fashion and cityscapes, but also interiors! Even on Instagram, there are so many picture-perfect or “Pinterest-perfect” bedrooms which leave you in awe. One of my resolutions is to freshen up by bedroom gradually, so I find items I really love and treasure. There are many elements to a bedroom, not just aesthetics and style, but also the overall ‘feel’ of the space. It’s true and I’ve read the articles, there is a huge sleep crisis occurring globally and a lack of sleep and rest can seriously impact your health. Why take a holiday when you can evolve your bedroom into the spa / getaway / retreat you’ve always wanted?
You ideally would want to feel relaxed, rested and peaceful in your bedroom which are feelings that can easily be evoked with your senses — touch, smell, hear and sight! (I’m not sure taste applies here really unless you keep snacks in your bedside drawer)! In these eight simple steps, you can find out how to create a dreamy Pinterest-perfect bedroom that you’ll never want to leave (until you have to for work) and can feel truly relaxed in the evenings!
Upgrade Your Bedsheets
First and foremost, you need to have good quality bedsheets. You don’t need to go out and spend megabucks on Egyptian Linen, but you can actually find reasonable priced sheets that are good quality and will without a doubt have that ‘sleeping on a cloud’ sensation. There’s nothing better than literally sinking into bed at the end of a long, hard day. Our Brompton, Brunswick and Stanhope bedding sets are traditional and classy in design in neutral colours. Ideally, go for neutral colours such as beige, white or cream as that then allows you to accessorise with throws, cushions and bedspreads.
Blankets & Cushions
Nothing beats curling up in bed with a blanket and a good book. Blankets are not just a great way to add a pop of colour and varied texture to your bed, but also provide warmth and comfort. Blankets range from cotton to wool to cashmere and everything in-between. Colours and textures are your friend as they bring a uniqueness to your space that is individual to you. I personally love the classic Herringbone design as you can never go wrong with that, otherwise other geometric patterns are fun and interesting. Cushions are another form of comfort which you can also play around with in terms of colour and pattern. Throw cushions are a playful way of incorporating your personality and style into your bedroom, giving it that luxury feel.
Candles / Diffusers
Scent can play a huge part in how relaxing or, for that matter, how ‘un-relaxing’ your bedroom will be. Candles are a wonderful way to not only refresh your bedroom with a variety of scents, but also set a soft, relaxing ambience with their natural flicker and dim lighting. Diffusers are convenient because they not only last for four or five months but are also recyclable, reusable, natural and safe — providing a consistent fragrance in your bedroom. For those romantics out there, try our Anniversary Reed Diffuser, a deeply sophisticated blend of fruity fig and creamy coconut which will completely capture your heart.
Any candle or diffuser that has lavender in it Try our Calming Lavender Candle, a luxury scented candle hand-poured to help you sleep. The finest pure therapeutic-grade Lavender essential oil, calms and relaxes, helping to combat stress and aide a good night’s sleep. Harnessing one of Nature’s most soothing oils, our sweet-smelling Lavender Flower candle combats irritability and effectively relieves insomnia.
Block Out Light
To get a good night’s sleep, it is essential to not just block out any noise, but also any light. Numerous studies have proven over and over again that we need to remove any distractions as well as unnatural sources that may prevent the melatonin chemical from kicking in, which allows our bodies to sleep. The best way to do this is to invest in light blocking curtains either included within the curtain or to buy a screen to go underneath. These can be bought anywhere online and are hugely affective. To jazz up your window space, try creating your own bespoke curtains with a fabric you love. What makes your bedroom better is if you stick to a colour scheme within your soft furnishings and accessories to unite the space. Keep it fresh and different thought with different patterns and textures; it’s what keeps your bedroom interesting!
Rather than having bright overhead lights that blast your space such as pod lighting, try shaded lighting for your bedroom. Shades that appear in floor lamps, chandeliers and table lamps soften the harshness of the lightbulb which creates a calm and soothing ambience in your room. The harsher the light, the less relaxed you’ll feel. We have a variety of styles from traditional to contemporary and modern lighting pieces which you can personalise and add that special touch to your room.
Declutter & Balance
Something that I am adamant about is to keep your space clean, clear and crisp. A cluttered space creates a cluttered mind. If you are fortunate to have significant built in storage space, that’s great, you’ll be able to keep your clothes and personal belongings away. If you don’t, look at buying some storage baskets or furniture items such as ottomans or footstools that have built in storage. Decluttering your space can be a therapeutic process, so it’s worth doing every few months to make sure that you know where your belongings are and what you could throw away, sell or donate. Clutter ain’t cool.
Balance is another key element to have a symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing space, especially when it comes to bedside tables. What you to on one side of the bed with your bedside table arrangement, do on the other. This will be pleasing to the eye and will also functionally make sense as you’ll have a tabletop to put your favourite book, your bedside table lamp and of course, your cup of tea.
A Warm Rug
There’s nothing worse than waking up and getting out of bed to land on a cold floor, especially in the winter! If you have carpeting already in your bedroom, you can skip this point, but if not, try purchasing a warm, wool rug with a pattern and colour(s) you enjoy. This can be a great way to add an accent with a cute small rug, or you can expand and invest in an area rug which will keep your whole room feeling and looking nice and warm. Many people say to select your rug first before doing anything else in the room and working around it to avoid future colour and pattern clashes. If this sounds like something you’d like to do, then a unique Moroccan rug might be a great starting point.
Show your stylish flair with art that reflects your interests, hobbies and personality. Whether it be original paintings, photographic prints, abstract prints or vintage posters, bland white walls are boring. I personally love the aerial beach prints that come in a variety of sizes and styles (i.e. triptychs, diptychs etc) to fit your space and create an airy and breezy image to view.
