Gone are the days of using the space surrounding your tub to store your many lotions and potions in your shower. Storage is a necessary element to any home to avoid clutter, but thoughtfully designed storage can not only provide function, but can also enhance your space. In lieu of one my current renovation project with a client based in South London where we are completely redoing the kitchen and bathroom, I thought it would be interesting to write about the benefits of storage space, and more importantly shower space.
Whether you are looking to buy, sell or remodel your home, it is important to notice the amount of functional storage but to also evaluate where potential storage could be built. In your bathroom, built in shower space, or shower niches as they are called, add more to design because you can literally think beyond the ordinary. Read our top tips for why we believe shower niches can enhance your space functionally and aesthetically, inject value into your home and view our top 10 extraordinary examples.
Be extraordinary with your shower niche by utilising different materials, textures, pops of colour, and more! Whether you are looking to remodel your shower or shower / bath, you can mix textures by matching the backsplash of your shower niche with your flooring while some colourful subway tiles break up the room. Depending on the look you’re looking for, you can use marble to create a contemporary / classic feel, pale colour subways tiles for a clean, fresh aesthetic or you could be bold and use mosaics and bright coloured tiles to have an impactful and vibrant shower.
Convenience & Custom Size
When redesigning your shower and/or bath, you can also decide on the size of the niche. It can either be a little segment of the shower designed for a few bits and bobs, or you could add in shelving (glass, or stone) to better organise your shampoos and soaps either by type or if you have a large family, each member can have their own space! For all you tidy-freaks out there (yes I am one of them!), this is an ideal way to keep your bathtub and shower clean without any bottle clutter, but also organise your lotions and potions in one place. If you have guests over, you can keep all their spare towels in the shelving for ease.
When you get into the habit of creating built in storage space, whether this is for your bathtub or empty space under your staircase, you begin to open up a room since you’ll be freeing up space that would otherwise be used. For smaller bathrooms, built in storage space is ideal as it also means it is a lot easier to clean around the side of the bath or shower floor. Here are some of our favourites:
